I’m a freelance writer, project manager and strategic consultant based in Portland, Oregon.
I started my career working in communications for the pear growers of the Pacific Northwest. My position at this nonprofit organization gave me space to develop relationships with registered dietitians, school foodservice professionals and industry colleagues to increase the public’s awareness of pear nutrition and versatility. As communications manager, I led a range of projects, including creating and implementing a recipe style guide, editing and overseeing the production of a canning guidebook and coordinating culinary and media events across the country.
In 2016, I moved to Kansas City, Missouri, to work for National Catholic Reporter as their first-ever engagement editor. I launched Instagram accounts for the company’s three publications, managed social media strategy and helped my colleagues think more broadly about engagement. My projects included developing reader callout forms, implementing a more civil commenting system and assisting in launching a thriving membership program that in its first years brought the company more than $300,000 in direct revenue.
At NCR, I also had the opportunity to explore and enact new ideas, including hosting and producing an award-winning podcast, launching an environmental justice vertical with an audience-specific growth plan and managing the product launch of an original curriculum unit for middle and high schoolers based on Global Sisters Report’s reporting and columns. I enjoyed advising other departments and staffers on audience strategy and served as an editorial point person on website migrations and redesigns.
I’m currently in the process of designing my dream job, one that allows me flexibility, creativity and variation while it connects me to passionate individuals, publications and small businesses seeking to grow and engage new audiences. I am available for writing, developing social and audience strategy and copywriting and editing newsletters, blogs and websites.
When I’m not at my desk, you can find me running or hiking with my husband, reading literary fiction and experimenting with cookbook recipes. I’m also dreaming about reacquainting myself with throwing pottery in a ceramics studio.
Here’s a note on what it’s like to work with me, from a former supervisor:
“Brittany was instrumental on so many projects at Global Sisters Report. Besides her key role as Engagement Editor, she oversaw the redesign of our website and was crucial in the launch of the GSR in the Classroom initiative. She is a thoughtful, insightful co-creator and collaborator, and has strong digital organizational and management skills. Besides all that, she’s great fun to work with! She’s well-read, well-traveled and has a broad range of interests and a keen sense of humor.”
